Ingrown Toenail Diagnosis

An ingrown toenail is diagnosed by your podiatrist who will conduct a thorough history and conduct a clinical examination. When patients describe their symptoms, an ingrown toenail will be localized to a particular toe, and even more specifically localized to the side of a particular toe.

Ingrown toenails are most often diagnosed on clinical examination. When visualizing the area one might see significant redness, warmth to touch, inflamed skin and possibly even drainage. Pain is significant when the area is touched. It is important to determine if the toenail is ingrown and problematic at the tip only or all away through the border of that nail. Once we have identified that, a proper treatment plan can begin.
